Washington: History

Situated along the Missouri River in Franklin County, Washington was first settled in the early 1800s by pioneers who were drawn to its river access and fertile land. Originally known as St. John Meyer’s Settlement, it was renamed Washington in 1839 in honor of George Washington and quickly developed into an important river port and trading hub for tobacco, hemp, and other agricultural products. Throughout the 19th century, large numbers of German immigrants shaped its culture, architecture, and local industries — many of the historic brick buildings downtown still reflect that heritage today. The arrival of the railroad strengthened Washington’s role as a manufacturing and commercial center, helping it transition into a thriving small city while preserving its historic identity as one of Missouri’s most distinctive river towns.
