Lake St. Louis, Missouri, originated in 1961 when developers Ellis Ellerman and Ira Nathan envisioned a private resort community centered around a recreational lake. They named the project “Lake St. Louis” and formed Trails Lake Development Corp. in 1962 to bring their vision to life. However, due to financial challenges and lack of experience, the project faced difficulties, leading to a foreclosure by R.T. Crow and his partners in 1966. Crow, recognizing the area’s potential, shifted the focus from a weekend getaway to a planned community, capitalizing on its location between major highways and the westward expansion of St. Louis. In 1967, St. Charles County approved the preliminary plan for the development, and by 1968, construction began on the 600-acre Lake St. Louis. The community continued to grow, with amenities like golf courses, tennis courts, and a clubhouse established by 1971. In 1975, facing the threat of annexation by neighboring cities, residents petitioned for incorporation, leading to the establishment of the town of Harbor Town. Two years later, the name was changed to Lake St. Louis, and the city was officially incorporated as a fourth-class city under Missouri law. Today, Lake St. Louis stands as a testament to mid-20th-century planned community development, blending recreational amenities with residential living.
