O’Fallon: History

O’Fallon, Missouri, founded in 1856 by German immigrants and named after John O’Fallon, president of the North Missouri Railroad, began as a small settlement centered around the railroad and agriculture. Its first resident, Nicholas Krekel, established the town’s initial store and served as postmaster and railroad agent. Incorporated in 1912 with just 600 residents, O’Fallon steadily modernized, notably building its first sanitary water and sewer system in 1939. Over time, it expanded from a modest rural community to a thriving suburban city with a population exceeding 90,000 by 2020. The city preserves its rich heritage through historical sites like the reconstructed settler fort, reflecting early American and Native American history as well as Civil War-era significance, making O’Fallon a blend of historic roots and modern growth.
