Troy, Missouri began as a frontier settlement in the early 1800s and was formally platted in 1819, becoming the county seat of Lincoln County. Its position along the old St. Louis–Hannibal road made it a regional stop for stagecoaches and traders, and the town quickly grew into a commercial center for surrounding farms and river communities. Through the 19th century, Troy developed a courthouse square that drew merchants, blacksmiths, and hoteliers, solidifying its role as a regional hub. While it remained largely agricultural for much of its history, the arrival of the railroad and later Highway 61 helped fuel steady expansion. Throughout growth and change, Troy has retained its identity as a traditional Missouri county seat — rooted in its historic downtown, courthouse, and long-standing role as the civic and economic heart of Lincoln County.
