How Often Should You Change Your Air Filter? (And What Happens When You Don't)

Of every maintenance task in your home, changing the air filter is the cheapest, the fastest, and the one people skip the most. It costs a few dollars and takes about two minutes. Skip it long enough, and it can cost you a service call, a coil cleaning, or years off the life of a system that runs nearly every day of a Missouri year.

We see the whole range during inspections. Filters so loaded they've gone gray and sagged in the frame. Filters installed backwards. Filters that don't fit the slot, so half the air goes around them instead of through them. And every so often, a system running with no filter in it at all.

In this article, we'll discuss what your filter is actually doing, how often it needs to be changed, why pets shorten that interval, and one small thing we put in every inspection report to make this easier on you.

Change a 1-inch air filter every month. A 4-inch media filter can usually go 4 to 6 months. Homes with pets need shorter intervals; with multiple pets, check the filter every 30 days regardless of thickness. A clogged filter restricts airflow, which makes the system work harder, raises energy use, and allows dirt to build up on the blower and evaporator coil. ENERGY STAR recommends checking your filter every month during heavy heating and cooling months and changing it whenever it looks dirty.

What does your air filter actually do?

Most people assume the filter is there to clean the air they breathe. That's part of it. But the filter's first job, the one it was put there for, is protecting the expensive equipment behind it.


Your furnace or air handler pulls a large volume of air through the return duct, across the blower wheel, and over the evaporator coil. Everything floating in your house goes with it: dust, dander, carpet fibers, drywall dust, pollen, pet hair. The filter is the only thing standing between all of that and the moving, wet, expensive parts of your HVAC system.

Cleaner indoor air is a real benefit on top of that, but how much your filter actually removes depends on the type of filter and its efficiency rating. That's its own subject, and we're covering filter types and MERV ratings in a separate post, including why the highest-rated filter on the shelf isn't necessarily the right one for your system.

For this article, the point is simpler: air has to move through the filter for any of it to work. When the filter clogs, everything downstream suffers.


How often should you change your air filter?

It depends on the filter, the house, and how hard the system is running. But you need a number to work from, so here's ours.

  • 1-inch filters: change monthly. This is the standard filter in most homes around here. It has very little media surface area, so it loads up fast. Carrier's own guidance gives the same general rule, about once a month for a 1-inch filter.

  • 4-inch media filters: every 4 to 6 months. The thicker pleated media has far more surface area, so it holds a lot more dust before airflow starts to suffer. Some manufacturers rate these for longer intervals. We'd rather you check at four months and change at six than assume you're covered for a year.


Whichever you have, look at it monthly. ENERGY STAR's guidance is to check the filter every month, especially during heavy heating and cooling months, and change it if it looks dirty, with three months as the outside limit for a standard filter. Pull it out and hold it up. If the pleats have gone gray and you can't see light through it, it's done, no matter what the calendar says.

Here in Missouri, both ends of the year work the system hard. Long humid cooling seasons, heavy spring pollen, and a real heating season mean the blower is running a lot of hours. A house that sits empty in a mild climate can stretch a filter. A house running the system nine or ten months a year generally can't, and you'll notice the difference.


Do pets change how often you should change the filter?

Yes, and more than most people expect.

Pet hair and dander load a filter faster than almost anything else in a normal household. Hair mats across the face of the filter rather than distributing into the pleats, which means it blocks airflow while using up only a fraction of the filter's actual capacity.

With one pet, tighten your interval. A 1-inch filter that would go a month in a pet-free house may look ready at three weeks.

With multiple pets, check it every 30 days no matter what you have installed. That includes 4-inch media filters. Carrier recommends the same 30-day check for multi-pet homes. You may not need to change it every time you look, but you need to look.

The same goes for a few other situations that shorten the interval: recent remodeling or drywall work, a home under construction nearby, heavy dust, someone in the house with allergies or asthma, or a system that runs almost continuously.


What happens when a filter gets clogged?

A loaded filter doesn't fail all at once. It gets progressively harder for the blower to pull air through, and the effects stack up quietly.

The system works harder for the same result. As ENERGY STAR states, a dirty filter slows down airflow and makes the system work harder to keep you warm or cool, which wastes energy. Your thermostat measures temperature, not effort, so the system just runs longer.

In cooling, restricted airflow can freeze the evaporator coil. The coil needs a steady volume of warm indoor air moving across it to absorb heat. Starve it for air, and the coil temperature can drop below freezing and ice over. Once that happens, the system stops cooling entirely, and now you're waiting on a service call in July.


We've personally experienced this on an older (now replaced) A/C system on our home. An issue caused the blower to stop pulling air through the system, freezing the evaporator coil on one of the hottest days of the year. Thankfully Level 9 HVAC out of Washington, MO was able to get us back up and running.

In heating, restricted airflow makes the furnace run hotter than designed. Furnaces have a high-limit safety switch that shuts the burners down when the heat exchanger gets too hot. With not enough air moving through, the furnace can trip that limit and short-cycle, firing, overheating, shutting off, and repeating. That safety switch is doing its job, but the repeated overheating is hard on the equipment over time.

Dirt starts getting past the filter. This one is worth understanding. The U.S. Department of Energy notes that when airflow is obstructed, dirt can bypass the filter and accumulate on the evaporator coil, reducing the coil's ability to absorb heat. A layer of dirt on the coil acts like insulation on the exact surface that's supposed to be transferring heat. Cleaning it is a professional job, and it isn't cheap.

ENERGY STAR ties it together: a clean filter prevents dust and dirt from building up in the system, which otherwise leads to expensive maintenance or early system failure. You're not just buying efficiency with a $6 filter. You're buying time on the equipment.

What if there's no filter at all?

We find this more often than you'd think, and it's usually not deliberate. A filter comes out for a coil cleaning and never goes back in. Someone couldn't find the right size at the store and figured they'd get to it. A rental turns over and nobody's sure whose job it was.

With no filter in place, there is nothing between your return air and the blower wheel and coil. Dust and hair collect on the blower wheel, where buildup on the blades measurably reduces how much air the system can move. Debris lands on the evaporator coil, which is wet with condensate during cooling season, so it sticks and stays. And the ductwork downstream collects whatever gets through. None of that shows up as a dramatic failure on day one. It shows up as a system that doesn't cool as well as it used to, a coil that needs professional cleaning, and equipment that wears out earlier than it should.

If we find a missing filter, it goes in the report with a photo. It's a genuinely easy fix, which is exactly why it's frustrating to see it left undone.


Why we write your filter size in the inspection report

Here's the small thing that solves the most common excuse for skipping a filter change: not knowing what to buy.

The InterNACHI Standards of Practice, which we follow, tell us what we're required to describe for the heating and cooling systems, the energy source, the heating and cooling methods, and the thermostat locations. The Standards also state that an inspector is not required to determine the size, capacity, or performance of any component or system.

Nothing in the Standards requires us to write down your filter size. We do it anyway.

When we inspect the furnace or air handler, we record the filter dimensions and put them in your report. That way, months after closing, when you're standing in the aisle at the hardware store trying to remember whether it's a 16x25x1 or a 20x25x1, the answer is in a document you already have on your phone.

It's a small courtesy. It's also the difference between a filter change that happens and one that gets put off another month. That's the whole idea behind how we build reports — the report should keep working for you long after the inspection is over.

(One scope note: electronic air cleaners and similar powered filtration equipment fall outside the Standards of Practice, so those aren't evaluated as part of a general home inspection.)

What filter mistakes do we see most often?

Beyond the loaded and the missing, a few recurring ones:

  • Installed backwards. Every filter has an airflow arrow printed on the frame. It points in the direction the air travels — toward the furnace or air handler. Backwards filters don't fail outright, but they don't perform the way they were designed to.

  • Wrong size, so air goes around it. A filter that's undersized for the slot leaves gaps, and air takes the easy path. A filter that doesn't seal isn't filtering. This is exactly the problem the documented size in your report is meant to prevent.

  • Only one filter changed when there are two. Plenty of homes have multiple return grilles, each with its own filter. People find one and never realize there's another.

  • Forgotten after a remodel. Construction and drywall dust will load a filter in days, not months. Change it when the work is done, then change it again shortly after.

  • The wrong filter for the system. Not every system is designed for a high-efficiency filter, and forcing one in can restrict airflow all on its own. We'll discuss MERV ratings and filter types in a future blog post.


The bottom line

Changing your air filter is the highest-return maintenance task you can do in your home relative to what it costs you. A 1-inch filter every month, a 4-inch every four to six, shorter if you have pets, and a quick look at it monthly regardless.

Does a home inspection include the air filter? The InterNACHI Standards of Practice require the inspector to describe the heating and cooling systems and report systems that don't operate; they don't require recording the filter size. Tech Inspect documents the filter size in every inspection report as a courtesy so homeowners have it for reference. Electronic air cleaners fall outside the Standards.

What air filter size do I need? The size is printed on the frame of your existing filter, listed as length x width x thickness. If you've had a Tech Inspect inspection, it's also recorded in your report.
