Polybutylene Pipe: How to Spot It, Why It Fails, and What It Costs to Replace

Some plumbing problems announce themselves, like a drip under the sink, a stain spreading across the ceiling. Polybutylene pipe isn't one of them. It can look perfectly fine for years and then fail without warning, sometimes behind a finished wall where the leak runs unnoticed long enough to cause real damage. That's exactly why we take it seriously the moment we spot it during an inspection, and so should you.

Polybutylene (PB) is a flexible plastic water-supply pipe — most often gray, but also blue, black, silver, or white — installed in up to 10 million U.S. homes from 1978 until the mid-1990s. It's prone to failing without warning: chlorine and other disinfectants in the water supply react with it and break it down from the inside, which can cause sudden leaks and hidden water damage. It's no longer an approved plumbing material; many insurers won't cover a home that still has it, and replacement requires a whole-home repipe, which is generally a several-thousand-dollar project. It's easy to confuse with PEX, a modern and reliable pipe, so the safest move is to have a licensed plumber confirm what you have and, if it's PB, plan to replace it.
What is polybutylene pipe?
Polybutylene is a plastic that was manufactured for home water-supply plumbing from 1978 until the mid-1990s. It was inexpensive, flexible, easy to install, and resistant to freezing, all advantages that made it very popular. InterNACHI estimates it was installed in up to 10 million homes in the United States during that period.
Production stopped in the mid-1990s after a wave of allegations that PB pipes were rupturing and causing property damage. Today it's no longer an approved material for new construction or remodels. Homes that still have it are left with a choice: replace the pipe, or carry the risk of a plumbing failure down the road.

How do I know if I have polybutylene?
The good news is that PB is usually easy to spot once you know what you're looking at.
Color. Most often gray, but it also shows up in blue, black, silver, or white. The blue version was used primarily outdoors and for cold water.
Home's Age: We have to put the home's age into context as well, Polybutylene was manufactured from 1978 until the mid-1990, if we add a few years for supply to run out, anything built post mid 1990's shouldn't have PB pipe.
Size. Typically 1/2 inch to 1 inch in diameter.
Flexibility. It's flexible plastic, not rigid, which helps set it apart from copper or CPVC.
It's a water-supply pipe. PB was not used for waste, drain, or vent lines, so you're looking at the supply side.
Markings. Depending on the pipe and what's exposed, the stamp printed on the side is the most reliable tell. Look for any of these:
PB2110 — the classic giveaway.
ASTM D-3309 — the "Standard Specification for Polybutylene (PB) Plastic Hot- and Cold-Water Distribution Systems." A strong indicator the pipe is polybutylene.
B137.8 — the Canadian counterpart to ASTM D-3309. It covers polybutylene pipe, tubing, and fittings for pressure uses like hot- and cold-water distribution, rated for 100 psi at temperatures up to 82°C (180°F).

Check where the main water line enters the home, around the water heater, and at pipes coming out of the walls near fixtures. One thing that trips people up: PB was sometimes joined to copper "stub-outs" that feed bathroom fixtures, so a single spot can show copper while other runs are polybutylene. That's why what's visible at the water heater isn't always the whole story — and because PB is sometimes partially replaced over the years or hidden inside walls, the reliable way to confirm what your home actually has is a licensed plumber.
Is it polybutylene or PEX? They look alike, but they're not the same.
Here's where homeowners get tripped up. PB isn't the only flexible plastic water pipe you'll find in a home. PEX — cross-linked polyethylene — is a modern, approved, widely used supply pipe, and at a glance it looks a lot like PB. Both are flexible plastic, and both show up in overlapping colors.
The distinction matters. PEX is a current, reliable material with none of the widespread failure history tied to polybutylene. PB is the problem child. And the confusion cuts both ways, a homeowner might panic over PEX that's perfectly fine, or wave off PB thinking it's modern PEX.
The reliable way to tell them apart is the printing stamped right on the pipe:
Polybutylene is marked PB2110, ASTM D-3309, or B137.8.
PEX is marked with "PEX" spelled out, along with ASTM F876 or F877, and often a type designation like PEX-a, PEX-b, or PEX-c.
There are a couple of physical tells too. PEX is more easily coiled and even more flexible than PB, and it's commonly color-coded, red for hot, blue for cold, or white, while PB was usually a uniform gray. But color alone can fool you, because both materials came in blue and white. When in doubt, read the stamp.
On the same inspection where we found the polybutylene above, the home also had PEX running elsewhere — a good reminder that one house can contain both.

So on that single job, the PEX was fine, and the polybutylene was the finding, same house, two different materials, only one of them a concern. When you can't find a legible stamp, or the pipe disappears into a wall, a licensed plumber is the one to confirm what you've actually got.
"How can I tell polybutylene from PEX?": Polybutylene and PEX are both flexible plastic water pipes and can look similar, but they are different materials. The reliable way to tell them apart is the marking printed on the pipe: polybutylene is stamped PB2110, ASTM D-3309, or B137.8, while PEX is stamped "PEX" along with ASTM F876 or F877. Why is polybutylene a problem, and how does it fail?
The core issue is that it fails without warning. According to InterNACHI, studies published by the University of Illinois at Chicago found that disinfectants like the chlorine in municipal water can react with polybutylene, and cause it to flake apart from the inside, at any point in the system. Small fractures deepen over time and eventually work their way to the pipe's exterior, and that's when water escapes.
Fittings and joints are another common failure point. Some manufacturers have argued that most leaks start there, especially where a pipe was installed improperly. Either way, the failure often happens out of sight. A lot of PB runs behind sheetrock, so a slow leak can go unnoticed for a long time, quietly feeding mold and water damage before anyone realizes there's a problem.
The scale isn't small. InterNACHI notes that class-action lawsuits against PB manufacturers were successful, with reported payouts to homeowners reaching around $1 billion.
Should polybutylene pipe be replaced?
No law or regulation requires you to replace polybutylene, but many plumbers strongly recommend it, and so do we when we find it. InterNACHI's position is straightforward: it's far cheaper to replace PB before it fails than to clean up after a rupture releases water onto your floors, appliances, and furniture. A single failure can easily cost more than the repipe itself.
What replacing it costs: a whole-home repipe, swapping the PB for PEX or copper, is generally a several-thousand-dollar project. National ballpark figures commonly land somewhere between about $4,000 and $15,000, depending on the size of the home, the number of bathrooms and fixtures, the material, and how much wall access is involved. PEX tends to sit at the lower end, and copper toward the higher end; larger homes and slab foundations push the number up, and smaller or partial jobs cost less. Drywall patching and paint are sometimes quoted separately, so confirm what's included.
Those are national ballparks for context only, not a Tech Inspect price and not a quote for your home. Get two or three itemized quotes from licensed plumbers for your specific home and market before you budget anything.
Will polybutylene affect my home insurance or my home's value?
This is often the part that surprises homeowners and causes the most problems.
Insurance. Polybutylene is widely treated as a known defect, and it can create real coverage headaches. Some carriers will decline to write or renew a policy on a home that still has active PB; others will issue coverage but with higher premiums or specific exclusions. Because it's considered a known issue, insurers generally treat replacement as the homeowner's responsibility rather than something a policy will pay for. This varies quite a bit from carrier to carrier, so if PB turns up, talk to your insurance agent early — before closing, so there are no surprises.
Resale. PB is a disclosure item, and its presence can lower a home's value or lengthen its time on the market as buyers factor a future repipe into their offers.
